Victoria Wine

Victoria is a small wine region in Australia with a varied soil, climate and terrain.  As a result, the wineries of this region produce a wide variety of wines.  From Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines near the coast and Cabernet Savignon and Shiraz in hotter areas further inland.  Victoria is one of the smallest yet most dense centers of population in Australia with the city of Melbourne at its heart.  Over 350 wineries produce wine here in over 20 different regions.

Victoria Wine Regions

  • Bendigo
Regular visitors to Bendigo fondly refer to it as 'The Winemakers Region' as a visitor to cellar door will often meet the winemakers, sleeves rolled up, tending their vines or working in the winery.

  • Geelong
In terms of sunshine and temperature, Geelong lies about half way between Bordeaux and Burgundy. Not surprising then that over 20 wineries are open for tasting.

  • Glenrowan
The wines here are aligned with Rutherglen styles, with great shiraz and fortified wines produced. The first grapes were planted at Baileys of Glenrowan, which today remains the largest vineyard.

  • Goulburn Valley
The Goulburn Valley is a huge area stretching from Seymour in central Victoria up to Echuca on the Murray River. Warm summers and good rainfall make this a fertile area.

  • Grampians
With a long history of winemaking, the rugged, rocky peaks of the Grampians form the dramatic backdrop to a region known as the birthplace of Australia's sparkling wine industry.

  • Macedon
The Macedon Ranges wine region has the coolest grape-growing climate of any wine region in the country. As a result the region has developed a reputation for excellent sparkling wines and pinot noir.

  • Mornington Peninsula
There is an impressive range of varietals grown across the relatively small region – everything from Tempranillo to Gewürztraminer – but the recognised strengths of this cool climate, slow-ripening region, Mornington Peninsula, remain chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot gris.

  • Murray Valley
Consumers appreciate the region's easy drinking, well-priced wines, especially chardonnay in Murray Valley.

  • Pyrenees
The reputation of the shiraz from the Pyrenees is well-known in Europe where these wines are regarded similarly to those from the Rhône Valley.

  • Rutherglen
With 20 cellar doors in close proximity, it's easy to spend a few days in Rutherglen. There is a huge variety of wines produced here, meander between vineyards comparing styles and vintages.

  • Yarra Valley
The Yarra Valley is irresistible, with visitors returning time and again to taste its famous wines and foods. Lush green paddock and rows of strong vines paint a story-book picture of rustic life.
